The 19th Century Classic
Of a
Wilderness Hunter

Meshach Browning's eventful life and his adventures with deer, bears, wolves and panthers, many of which he killed in hand-to-hand fighting, presents to the reader a collection of hunting stories which are not surpassed by any in print. His rifle was a flintlock, his hunting knife was his own invention, his fires were built with flint and steel, and all of his personal equipment was of the most meager sort, yet he did not hesitate to take on the wounded panther or follow the bear into his den. Referring to the risks he took, he said "I was determined to win the fight or lose my life in the attempt."

This latest printing of Meshach Browning's autobiography is a faithful reproduction of his scarce work, originally penned with turkey quill and first published in 1859. His Reminiscencesfrom 1795 through 1839 describe his remarkable adventure filled "hunting-fever" years in the forests and hills of the Appalachians.

Mr. Browning presents in vivid detail many life-theatening encounters while stalking deer, bear, panthers and wolves in the "western wilderness". Known today as Western Maryland and the surrounding region of West Virginia.

Meshach's hunting episodes have entertained and endeared many generations of young and old game stalkers, and established Forty-Four Years of the Life of a Hunter as an important American Frontier hunting classic of the 19th century.

Recognized as Maryland's most famous frontier hunter for almost 150 years, Mr. Browning recounts his remarkable adventures during many "hunting-fever" years while stalking large game in the Appalachian wilderness, now known as Garrett County and the surrounding region of West Virginia.

Meshach Browning's keen observations and commentary on hunting, woodcraft and wild animal behavior and habitat; together with his "roughly written down" description of Western Maryland folkways and settlement life, has long established this book as an important 19th century classic.
